When I was first starting out, I developed a self-promotion piece (I’m a big fan of self-promotion) that included a letter from me and a personal check. It was very simple premise: since I wanted “time” from a creative director and time is money, I would send some of my money and ask for some of their time.
I sent hundreds of these letters and checks – amounts that were comical, like $3.64 or $4.19 – to creative directors and agency principals all over New York. Needless to say, it got quite a reaction. Over 100 people wrote back. (Who does that any more?) And even funnier, some people got the joke and some people didn’t. Here are a few of my favorites:
